Green River Fly fishing guide

Green River fly fishing 1-26-2012

by Doug Roberts on 01/26/12

I floated the B-section yesterday with some friends and had a great day of streamer fishing. We caught and released a lot of nice browns and bows, the weather was great and we did not see another fisherman all day, it was way cool!

I floated the Green River yesterday, and the fishing was great and weather was great as well. The fish were eating streamers and nymphs very well. We saw a ton of mallards and several other kinds of ducks, we also saw a couple of Bald Eagles, 1 Golden Eagle, and to our surprise we saw a lone Big Horn Sheep ram, it was a surprise because all the Big Horn's were removed from the canyon a couple of years ago because of some parasite that the DOW did not want to spread. I don't know if they reintroduced the Big Horns or if this one wandered in from somewhere, but I will try to find out.

Things are starting to slow down here on the Green River, after this weekend there should not be nearly as much traffic. The fish are starting to get very selective but are still eating drys and nymphs very well. This is great time of year to fish the Green River.

While the water remains high the fishing remains great! The nymph fishing has been awesome and the fish are as fat as I have ever seen in any river I have ever fished. It is a great time to be fishing the Green River. Here is a link to a web album of my last trip. https://picasaweb.google.com/gdwrightiii/GreenRiverJune2011?feat=email#

The river is still flowing at 4600 cfs and nymph fishing is very good. I am hoping for warmer weather to get the terrestrials more active to get the fish eating dry flies but one way or another it's just fun catching fish. This year's high water has fished better than any other year that I can remember, the moss factor is definitely less than last year.
